Body of Missing 21-Year-Old Navy Sailor Found; Another Sailor Detained

The body of a 21-year-old Navy sailor who had been missing since May 29 has been discovered, leading to the detention of another sailor, according to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS).

Angelina “Angie” Resendiz was last spotted on the morning of her disappearance at her barracks in Miller Hall at Naval Station Norfolk, as reported by Virginia State Police.

Her remains were located in a wooded area in Norfolk on Monday, with confirmation of her identity occurring the following day. Meanwhile, another Navy sailor has been placed in pretrial confinement in relation to Resendiz’s death, though authorities have withheld the sailor’s identity.

“Charges under the Uniform Code of Military Justice are pending,” NCIS stated. “NCIS remains committed to uncovering the facts surrounding the tragic death of Seaman Resendiz to ensure accountability and justice.”

A native of Texas, Resendiz served as a culinary specialist aboard the USS James E. Williams. According to her mother, Esmeralda Castle, Resendiz enlisted in the Navy in 2023 after finishing high school, feeling a strong calling to join.

“She thought that one day she might be able to cook for the president and other world leaders,” Castle shared with ABC News last week. “She worked really hard on her ship.”

Castle added that friends had informed her that the last person Resendiz was seen with was also missing but reappeared on June 2, leaving her with more questions.

“There are no answers for me. I just want my kid,” she expressed sorrowfully.
