As the nation braces for a series of protests this week, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced the deployment of the Texas National Guard to various locations throughout the state to “ensure peace and order.” This decision comes in anticipation of demonstrations, including one planned in San Antonio.
A statement from Abbott’s office, shared with ABC News’ affiliate KSAT, asserted that the Guardsmen are prepared to “uphold law and order across our state.” The governor emphasized that while peaceful protests are an essential part of American democracy, Texas will not tolerate the kind of lawlessness seen in other cities, such as Los Angeles, where violent protests against the Trump administration’s immigration policies have erupted.
“Peaceful protests are part of the fabric of our nation, but Texas will not tolerate the lawlessness we have seen in Los Angeles,” Abbott’s office declared. “Anyone engaging in acts of violence or damaging property will be swiftly held accountable to the full extent of the law.”
During a press briefing, Abbott made clear, “Peaceful protest is legal. Harming a person or property is illegal & will lead to arrest.” He assured that the Texas National Guard would utilize all available resources and strategies to assist law enforcement in maintaining order.
In San Antonio, Assistant Chief Jesse Salame of the San Antonio Police Department confirmed that National Guard members have been dispatched to help with the situation.
Meanwhile, tensions are also rising in Georgia, where Attorney General Chris Carr issued a stern warning, stating, “We will not hesitate to bring Domestic Terrorism charges for those who earn it.” He further clarified the distinction, saying, “It’s very simple. Protesters use words. Rioters use violence. There is no gray area.”
