Fans eagerly anticipating the sequel to Spaceballs have received a flurry of exciting news after nearly four decades. It all kicked off with the announcement that Mel Brooks will reprise his iconic role as Yogurt in the upcoming film. Following this, Rick Moranis and Bill Pullman confirmed their return from the original 1987 classic. The latest announcement, perhaps the most thrilling yet, reveals that Lewis Pullman, son of Bill Pullman, will portray his father’s character’s son.
The Hollywood Reporter shared the casting news along with initial plot details. Lewis Pullman will take on the role of Starburst, the son of Lone Starr (played by Bill Pullman) and Queen Vespa, whose character will be reprised by Daphne Zuniga. Starburst joins two other central characters: Destiny, played by Keke Palmer, and a yet-to-be-named character portrayed by Josh Gad. Speculation runs rampant about Gad’s role—could he be a Skroob, a Helmet, or a Barf? Fans will have to wait and see.
Lewis Pullman has recently garnered attention for his standout performances, including as the charming naval aviator Bob in Top Gun: Maverick and as Sentry in this summer’s Thunderbolts. While he previously appeared alongside his father in the 2017 film The Ballad of Lefty Brown, this project is particularly special for fans. The casting completes a trio reminiscent of the film’s early tagline: “The Schwartz Awakens.” This clever play on the seventh Star Wars film suggests that the narrative will feature younger characters stepping into the spotlight, while legacy characters like Brooks, Pullman, and Moranis will have supporting roles. Amazon describes the film as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”
Spaceballs 2 is slated for release in theaters in 2027. The film will be directed by Josh Greenbaum, known for Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, with a script by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad. Although it currently lacks an official title, expectations are high that it will honor the playful spirit of its predecessor, with many hoping it will be called Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.
