Google is experimenting with a new feature that adds AI-generated audio summaries to the first page of search results on mobile devices. Users can access this feature, called Audio Overviews, through the Labs settings, enabling them to create a podcast-style discussion for specific queries.
For instance, if a user searches for “How do noise cancellation headphones work?”, a button labeled “Generate Audio Overview” will appear below the “People also ask” section. By clicking this button, users can expect to receive a generated audio summary in approximately 40 seconds, according to Google.
The generated Audio Overview will be accessible in a compact player integrated directly within the search results. Users will have the ability to play, pause, mute, and modify the playback speed of the audio clip. These summaries feature two AI-generated hosts who engage in a lively discussion about the selected topic. Furthermore, links to some of the sources referenced in the Audio Overview will be available just beneath the playback controls.
At present, this feature is limited to English-speaking users in the United States. Since its launch last year, Google has expanded the availability of Audio Overviews to various contexts, enabling users to generate audio discussions from notes, Gemini’s extensive research, Google Docs files, and more.
