Just three months after the success of an indie film featuring a black cat that won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, Disney-Pixar has announced its own project centered around a black cat. “Gatto,” directed by Enrico Casarosa, known for his work on “Luca” and “La Luna,” will be set in Venice, Italy, and follows the story of a black cat named Nero. According to the official synopsis, “Indebted to a feline mob boss, Nero finds himself forced to forge an unexpected friendship that may finally lead him to his purpose…”
During the Pixar presentation at Annecy today, additional details were revealed:
– Nero has an aversion to water but a love for music, and he forms a bond with a street artist named Maya.
– The film adopts a more stylized approach than previous Pixar features, featuring a painterly aesthetic with hand-painted textures and shaders, building on the trend seen in recent CG films like the “Spider-Verse” series and “The Wild Robot.”
– Produced by Andrea Warren, who also produced “Luca,” “Gatto” is set to premiere in the summer of 2027. It will follow several upcoming Pixar releases, including “Elio” in 2025, “Hoppers” in 2026, and “Toy Story 5” in 2026.
