J.J. Spaun has triumphed under challenging course conditions and fierce competition to win the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club on Sunday. Having turned professional in 2012, Spaun secured his first major victory, despite having only one previous win on the PGA Tour.
The culmination of his success came in dramatic fashion as he sank an impressive 64-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to seal the victory, marking the longest putt made throughout the tournament. Spaun completed the event with a score of 66-72-69-72, finishing as the only player under par at Oakmont.
This year’s U.S. Open lived up to its reputation, with some of golf’s elite, including Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, struggling amidst tough greens and dense rough, compounded by heavy rain on the final day. Spaun initially took the lead early in the tournament by shooting a 4-under 66 during the first round, but his performance faltered with a 2-over on Friday.
Despite a strong comeback with a 1-under round on Saturday, Spaun’s Sunday started poorly, as he faced five bogeys in his first six holes and fell down the leaderboard. In previous circumstances, he admitted he would have been disheartened by such a performance; however, a weather delay proved pivotal, allowing him to regroup.
Returning to the course, Spaun showcased resilience, proceeding to play a strong back nine, making par on the first two holes before birdies on holes 12 and 14. As the leaderboard saw multiple contenders jostling for position, Spaun faced a setback with a bogey on 15 before recovering with back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18 to clinch the win.
While his long putt on 18 was a highlight, his drive on 17 also positioned him well for an eagle attempt. Robert MacIntyre, who posted a 2-under 68, waited in the clubhouse to see how Spaun would finish, knowing that a misstep could hand him the trophy. However, Spaun’s final putt secured his victory and left MacIntyre in second place.
The final top ten leaderboard featured Viktor Hovland in third at +2, with several players—including Cameron Young, Tyrrell Hatton, Carlos Ortiz, and Sam Burns—tied for fourth at +3. Others in the top ten included Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, Ben Griffin, Russell Henley, and Adam Scott.
Additionally, Spaun celebrated his Father’s Day with his daughters, Emerson and Violet, and his wife, Melody, at the 18th green, capping off an eventful day and a remarkable week of golf.
