iPadOS 26 has brought significant changes to the multitasking capabilities of Apple’s tablet, notably removing two previously popular features: Split View and Slide Over.
With this latest update, Apple has opted to retire these functionalities in favor of an enhanced windowing experience. Although these changes mark a departure from earlier multitasking systems, Stage Manager will remain available for the time being.
For those who may not be familiar, Split View allowed users to display two applications side by side in either a balanced 50-50 split or a more nuanced 66-33 configuration. On the other hand, Slide Over functioned as a dedicated stack of applications that could be accessed from the side of the screen, allowing users to pull it in as needed over their main apps, offering seamless multitasking.
However, the latest iPadOS version signifies a shift, as Apple has decided to phase out these features entirely. While some aspects of their functionality might still be achievable through the new windowing system, the overall operation differs significantly, particularly in terms of replicating the convenience of Slide Over.
At this point, the initial beta of iPadOS 26 has just been released, leaving the door open for potential adjustments to its multitasking features prior to the official launch this fall. Updates will be provided if there are any significant changes.
