ABC7 Photojournalist Stephen Coleman Retires After 43 Years With Eyewitness News

LOS ANGELES, While audiences frequently see ABC7 reporters sharing the day’s top stories, the vital contributions of those behind the camera often go unnoticed. Among them is photojournalist Stephen Coleman, who bid farewell on Friday after an impressive 43 years with Eyewitness News.

Throughout his extensive career, Coleman has captured some of the most significant events in the Los Angeles area. His work includes documenting everything from wildfires and presidential elections to notable incidents like the 1992 riots and high-profile trials, including those of Michael Jackson and O.J. Simpson. Reflecting on the Simpson trial, he remarked, “The trial of the century. It was crazy. It was just madness.”

Coleman began his journey at KABC-TV 43 years ago, covering the emotional highs and lows of the region. Though he spent most of his time behind the camera, his role has also been pivotal during breaking news events, such as the recent Palisades Fire.

In addition to his video work, Coleman is passionate about still photography, often sharing his unique perspective with viewers. “This is my way of volunteering. This is my way of trying to have an impact,” he expressed. “What I hope that people take away from seeing my images is to see the human being that’s in the image. These are people, they’re like you and me.”

Recently, Coleman received recognition from L.A. County Supervisor Hilda Solis, who honored him for his extensive body of work. His photographs are currently showcased on the third floor of the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration.

“I would watch him and his interaction with people, my constituents, and for me, that really shared a moment of someone’s compassion,” Solis stated.

Eyewitness News Reporter Sid Garcia, who has collaborated with Coleman for decades across various areas of Southern California, praised him for both his professional and personal qualities. “You share a lot with somebody when you’ve been with them for nearly 30 years, and while he’s a great photographer, he’s also a great dad to his two kids, a really good friend, and in our case, I think I can safely say, he’s been a good brother,” he said. “Congratulations, Stephen, on your retirement, my friend. You’ve certainly earned it.”

L.A. Mayor Karen Bass also took a moment to acknowledge Coleman’s contributions, saying, “Stephen, I hear you’re getting ready to enter into a whole new phase of life, so let me just thank you for 43 great years with Channel 7. We have enjoyed your photography for many, many years, and I hope you have a wonderful retirement. Thank you, thank you for your service.”

As Coleman reflects on his career, he identifies grace, honesty, and care as the principles that guided him. In his own words, he concluded, “Be well, stay in touch, and take care of each other.”
