Apple CarPlay Set for Major Upgrades with iOS 26 Release

Last week, during the annual Worldwide Developers’ Conference (WWDC), Apple unveiled significant enhancements in iOS 26, focusing on features for Apple CarPlay users.

For those eager to try the latest updates, enrollment in the developer beta will be necessary. Here’s a sneak peek at the new functionalities expected to roll out in Apple CarPlay this fall.

1. **Redesigned CarPlay Interface**
As part of the iOS 26 overhaul, CarPlay is receiving a fresh design aimed at delivering a coherent and engaging experience that integrates seamlessly into vehicles. The updated look includes visually appealing icons that perform well in both light and dark modes, alongside a more compact notification design that ensures clarity in navigation.

2. **Introduction of Widgets**
CarPlay will feature widgets, offering users quick access to vital information like the weather, reminders, and smart home updates. Additionally, live activities such as a friend’s flight status will now display on the CarPlay screen, proving useful for airport pickups.

3. **Expansion of Apple CarPlay Ultra**
Previously introduced, Apple CarPlay Ultra enhances the traditional CarPlay experience by integrating with the car’s touchscreen and dashboard. “It builds on the capabilities of CarPlay and provides the ultimate in-car experience by deeply integrating with the vehicle to deliver the best of iPhone and the best of the car,” Apple stated in a news release.

Currently, CarPlay Ultra is available only with new Aston Martin vehicle orders in the US and Canada. However, following WWDC, Apple announced collaboration with other manufacturers to broaden the reach of this technology. Reports indicate that companies such as Hyundai, Kia, Ford, and Volvo are already pursuing integration of CarPlay Ultra into their upcoming models.
