Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, known for her role as Lily in the beloved sitcom “Modern Family,” recently came out as bisexual during Pride Month, using a humorous reference from the show to deliver her message.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Anderson-Emmons played the adopted daughter of characters Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cam (Eric Stonestreet). In her Instagram video, she lip-synced a memorable line from a scene in which her character humorously asserts her identity, exclaiming, “I’m gay!” when trying to understand her Vietnamese heritage.

In the video, Anderson-Emmons noted the recurring joking about her sexuality, stating, “People keep joking so much [about] me being gay when I literally am (I’m bi).” She captioned her post with warm wishes for Pride Month, writing, “happy pride month to all and to all a goodnight hehehe #modernfamily #lily #pridemonth #bi #pride.”

Fans quickly rallied in the comments to express their support. Comments included, “Omgggg Cam and Mitch would be so happy” and a reference to a line from the show where Mitchell reassures Lily, saying, “Honey you are not gay you are just confused.”

Anderson-Emmons portrayed Lily for nine seasons, joining the cast in Season 3 after the character was originally played by twins Ella and Jaden Hiller. Her performance contributed significantly to the show’s legacy, and many fans would welcome the chance to see a revival.

Reflecting on her upbringing as a child star, Anderson-Emmons shared insights during a 2024 interview with Trisha Paytas (via People). She expressed gratitude for the opportunities the show provided but acknowledged the challenges of growing up in the spotlight. “Modern Family has brought me so many blessings into my life, and I’m forever grateful. But I think kids need to have a normal experience, and I don’t know if that’s the way to do it,” she remarked.

She further elaborated on the confusion of making career choices at such a young age: “How do you choose what you want to do for eight years when you’re four years old?” Her sentiments echo those expressed by fellow cast member Ariel Winter regarding the struggles faced by child actors.

Since the show concluded, Anderson-Emmons has successfully engaged with her audience online, embracing her identity as part of her personal journey. Paytas joined the chorus of support on her Instagram, commenting simply, “Queen!”

“Modern Family” continues to be available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
