A tragic bridge collapse in western India’s Maharashtra state has resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals and injured 32 others, according to the region’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The incident occurred on Sunday when an iron bridge over a river gave way, sending numerous tourists plummeting into the fast-flowing waters below.
Fadnavis reported on the social media platform X that six of the injured individuals are in serious condition and emphasized that rescue operations were underway. Local reports indicated a significant number of visitors were present on the bridge at the time of the collapse.
Emergency teams, including those from the National Disaster Response Force, have been deployed to the scene in the Kundamala area of Pune district, which has recently experienced heavy rainfall that enhanced the river’s current. While there was no rain at the time of the incident, the area is known for attracting picnickers and tourists.
Photos from the site reveal gatherings of people near the Indrayani River where the collapse took place. The tragedy has sparked renewed scrutiny of India’s infrastructure safety, as the country has a history of similar disasters, including a notable incident in 2022 when a historic cable suspension bridge in Gujarat collapsed, resulting in the deaths of at least 132 people.
