Controversial Battlefield 2042 and Mass Effect Crossover Raises Eyebrows

Electronic Arts (EA) is known for its frequent crossovers, often incorporating elements from one franchise into another. Titles like Apex Legends and The Sims have seen various themed cosmetics, but the latest crossover between Battlefield 2042 and BioWare’s Mass Effect series has stirred controversy. While cross-promotions are common in gaming, the timing of this latest release raises questions, especially given EA’s recent restructuring of BioWare, which has left the studio grappling with significant changes.

From June 17 to July 1, players can access Mass Effect-themed bundles in Battlefield 2042, featuring armor and weapon sets inspired by the iconic N7 gear. The bundles include:

– **Galactic Bundle – 1750 BFC:** “Centuries from now and in the farthest reaches of space, a good soldier still makes all the difference. Take command and carve your legacy into the stars.”
– **Scoped & Dropped Bundle – 2000 BFC:** “Whether you’re tearing across the battlefield or shooting bottles with an old friend, you need the best gear in the galaxy to do the job right.”
– **Citadel Bundle – 3000 BFC:** A comprehensive package containing all cosmetics for the Mass Effect crossover event.

Although this crossover may have been planned before EA’s drastic layoffs at BioWare earlier this year, the optics are troubling. Many view the move as a cash grab, profiting off the loyal fanbase of a franchise that suffered significant losses when EA sought to make BioWare “more agile” and “focused.”

Inside BioWare, the team is still developing a fifth installment in the Mass Effect series. Additionally, the upcoming Dragon Age title, The Veilguard, is anticipated as the studio’s last major release before these layoffs took effect.
