Don’t underestimate Donald Trump

Trump’s Unyielding Pursuit of Ambitions Amid Upheaval

In a flurry of activity last week, President Trump welcomed German Chancellor Angela Merkel to the Oval Office, implemented a travel ban targeting 12 countries for visa violations, and engaged in optimistic tariff discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Moreover, he aimed to push his “one big beautiful bill” through Congress, all while a wave of positive economic news buoyed the stock market, featuring a jobs report exceeding expectations along with rising wages and declining inflation. However, overshadowing these developments was a significant fallout between Trump and tech mogul Elon Musk.

It’s clear which story dominated media coverage; sensationalism often eclipses the beneficial news. Having spent a decade observing Trump, I’ve learned some valuable lessons. First, amidst predictions of impending doom, it’s wise to remain calm. High-stakes moments inevitably pass, much like the proverbial nine lives of a cat. The second takeaway: always anticipate another dramatic twist around the corner.

Despite ongoing challenges from numerous legal actions and threats of imprisonment, Trump remains a relentless force in American politics. The recent rift with Musk might seem troubling, but history suggests that predictions of his political demise are overstated. He may not be invincible, but he’s one of the most resilient figures in today’s political landscape.

Trump’s urgency to accomplish key initiatives drives him to bypass distractions. He is acutely aware of how previous distractions, particularly the Russia investigations, led to significant Democratic victories in the House during his first term. Having secured a second chance with a Republican-controlled Congress, he refuses to waste time on unproductive pursuits or lament over lost alliances, even with influential figures like Musk.

As he approaches his 79th birthday next Saturday, Trump understands the realities of time; he is not inclined to overstretch his stay in political office, especially when he could potentially experience a decline similar to President Biden’s. This sense of urgency also plays into the significance of his split from Musk, as their once-valuable alliance not only benefited both men but also served American interests.

The extent of Musk’s influence on Trump’s last campaign remains uncertain, yet it is clear that Musk’s collaboration helped broaden Trump’s appeal beyond loyal MAGA supporters. In contrast, Kamala Harris’s attempts to enhance her bipartisan credentials by enlisting former Republican powers like Dick Cheney and Liz Cheney fell flat when compared to Trump’s connections with outspoken figures like Musk and others.

Their partnership hit a roadblock when Musk criticized Trump’s tax and spending policies, asserting, “I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful, but I don’t know if it can be both.” This public disagreement followed a seemingly amicable farewell meeting in the Oval Office, highlighting the abruptness of their fallout.

Despite the publicized discord, it appears unlikely that the rift will significantly hinder Trump’s agenda. Even major outlets like The New York Times have acknowledged that while Musk’s departure is notable, the prospects for Trump’s initiatives remain intact.

Observers often mistakenly analyze Trump through the lens of his tumultuous first term. However, the current iteration of Trump embodies growth and improvement. His time out of office has provided him with greater insight into Washington’s dynamics, significantly informing his objectives and strategies.

Moreover, Biden’s policies, which have aggressively inflated prices and initiated controversy along the southern border, have unwittingly paved the way for Trump’s political resurgence. An assassination attempt in Pennsylvania further solidified Trump’s belief that he has a divine purpose, claiming, “I’m not supposed to be here… I’m supposed to be dead.”

During an interview scheduled for the day after the incident, Trump humorously remarked on his brush with death, noting how iconic the moment of him rallying his supporters appeared despite his injuries. This newfound belief, albeit unconventional for him, reinforces his sense of purpose: “God spared me for a purpose, and that purpose is to restore America to greatness.”

This conviction reflects a calmer and more gracious Trump, who seemed unperturbed by the Musk fallout during recent media appearances. Addressing the situation, he attributed the conflict to “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

Yet despite the disarray, the narrative persists: “The dogs bark, but the caravan moves on.”
