Klei Interactive Unveils Away Team: A Unique 2D Base Builder Set in the Oxygen Not Included Universe

Klei Interactive, the studio behind popular titles like Invisible Inc. and Don’t Starve, has revealed its latest project, Away Team, a 2D base-building game that expands upon the universe of Oxygen Not Included. While I haven’t had the pleasure of playing Oxygen Not Included myself, Klei’s track record is impressive. The studio is known for hits like Mark Of The Ninja, and so far, Away Team is shaping up to be another intriguing release with its unconventional focus on challenging physics.

Away Team invites comparisons to Noita by promising a world where “every tile is simulated”. The game builds on the complex mechanics introduced in Oxygen Not Included, which former RPS contributor Nate described as “a machine for procedurally generating engineering problems.” The intricate interaction of numerous physical properties ensures that players experience a unique scenario every time.

In this adventure, players assume the role of a lone colonist from Oxygen Not Included, commonly referred to as a Duplicant, who accidentally activates a large red button and finds themselves launched into an unfamiliar world. Armed with a vacuum gun, your mission is to delve into the environment and construct your shelter using the resources you discover. Survival relies on your ability to manage food, oxygen, and a solid grasp of electrical conductivity—all while aiming with precision.

Every element in this universe adheres to the laws of thermodynamics; liquids flow and evaporate, and flames can spread when near combustible materials. Unlike the calm demeanor often portrayed in Star Trek missions, Away Team presents a more chaotic experience. I would gladly watch a sci-fi series where Captain Picard meticulously navigates the challenges of acid vat construction, exclaiming an incredulous “oh shit” just as the credits roll.

Currently, Away Team does not have a scheduled release date, but it does have an active Steam page available for interested players.
