The New York Mets have placed right-handed pitcher Tylor Megill on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to June 15, due to a right elbow sprain. Manager Carlos Mendoza informed MLB.com reporter Anthony DiComo that the best-case scenario for Megill’s return is four to five weeks. In a corresponding move, the Mets have recalled fellow right-hander Justin Garza.
Megill spoke with the media, including Laura Albanese from Newsday, stating that he is experiencing inflammation without ligament damage. This assertion appears to contrast with the team’s official announcement, as sprains typically indicate some level of stretching or tearing. Nonetheless, Megill seems optimistic about his recovery, planning to take a break for seven to ten days before a reevaluation.
If this timeline holds, it would be encouraging news for Megill, who has been enjoying a standout 2025 season. Prior to this injury, he had made 14 starts and boasted a 3.95 ERA, significantly better than his career average of 4.56. Although his walk rate of 10.8% slightly exceeds previous seasons, his strikeout rate of 29.2% is markedly higher than his career average of 24.3%.
Megill, who recently became eligible for arbitration and is earning $1.975 million this year, is expecting a raise this offseason. However, a prolonged absence could affect his earning potential, prompting him to aim for a swift return.
The Mets’ rotation depth is further challenged by recent developments. Following reports of interest in righty Paul Blackburn, the situation escalated when Kodai Senga was placed on the 15-day IL due to a hamstring strain. The Mets now find themselves with only David Peterson, Clay Holmes, Griffin Canning, and Blackburn available as rotation options.
Frankie Montas, who has struggled during his rehab from a lat strain with a troubling 13.17 ERA in five outings, might be called upon soon, although reports suggest a potential shift to the bullpen could be considered. Meanwhile, Sean Manaea is also on a rehab assignment, but his progress has been uneven, with only three appearances logged so far.
As the Mets prepare for their upcoming games, they will need to make quick decisions about their rotation. Peterson, Blackburn, and Holmes are slated as the next three starters, with Canning possibly stepping in for Megill’s originally scheduled start on Friday. Alternatives from the 40-man roster, such as Blade Tidwell, Justin Hagenman, and Brandon Waddell, may also come into play until injured players return.
As the trade deadline nears, the Mets’ situation is one to watch closely. Just a week ago, their starting depth suggested they might sell, but their current challenges could shift their strategy toward acquiring additional players.
