Mountain Metro transit to begin free summer rides Sunday

Mountain Metropolitan Transit (MMT) is set to provide free rides to public transit passengers in southern Colorado this summer, starting this Sunday. The complimentary service will be available from July 1 through August 31, aimed at encouraging more residents to utilize public transportation during the ozone season when air quality can worsen.

This initiative is made possible by Senate Bill 24-032, which allows Colorado transit agencies to access an Ozone Season Transit Grant. This marks MMT’s fourth consecutive year of participating in the “Zero Fare for Better Air” campaign, a program designed to promote cleaner air in the region.

Lan Rao, the transit division manager at MMT, shared enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “Over the first three summers, we have given over 2 million rides to people in the Pikes Peak Region, and we are looking forward to doing it again this summer.”

To commemorate the commencement of free fares, MMT will host a “Ride Free for the Summer 2025” celebration on Tuesday, June 3, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Downtown Terminal, located at the intersection of Kiowa Street and Nevada Avenue. The event is open to the public, inviting everyone to join in the festivities.
