Details have emerged concerning the OpenAI board’s rationale behind the recent departure of Sam Altman. The board has articulated that their loss of confidence stemmed from a pattern of Altman’s behavior, characterizing it as less than consistently candid in his interactions with them. This assessment ultimately led to the decision that he could no longer effectively lead OpenAI.

According to an official statement released on Friday, November 17, 2023, the board emphasized the importance of transparent communication. “The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI,” the statement read. “After a deliberative review process, it concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities.”

Mira Murati Steps in as Interim CEO

In the wake of Altman’s exit, Mira Murati, the Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI, has been appointed as the interim CEO. The board has expressed confidence in Murati’s leadership capabilities during this transitional period while they actively search for a permanent successor.

The board stated, “Mira Murati, the company’s chief technology officer, will serve as interim CEO, effective immediately. Mira is exceptionally qualified to step into the role, and the board has full confidence in her ability to lead OpenAI during this period of transition.”

Greg Brockman Resigns
