Sergio Velázquez, the former Police Chief of Hialeah, has been arrested on several serious charges, including fraud and theft, according to a report from 7 News Miami on Monday.
The 61-year-old, who served from 2012 to 2021, transitioned to a career as an electrician after leaving the police department. He was booked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and now faces multiple charges, such as money laundering and failure to file required registration reports involving over $100,000, organized fraud exceeding $50,000, and first-degree grand theft involving amounts over $100,000.
Hialeah, located in the Miami metropolitan area, is recognized as one of the most Hispanic cities in the United States, with over 80% of its residents of Cuban descent.
Caribbean National Weekly reported that Velázquez had a checkered history even prior to the extensive investigation into the latest fraud claims. Among the past allegations against him was reportedly engaging in a romantic relationship with a woman he met at the police station after she was arrested for driving under the influence. Furthermore, Velázquez underwent an 18-month investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for a “pattern of criminal misconduct.” This inquiry included an allegation that he set fire to a vehicle belonging to a man who had previously dated a woman Velázquez was involved with, though no charges were ever filed.
Hialeah Mayor Jacqueline Garcia-Roves commented on Velázquez’s arrest, stating, “Undoubtedly, this marks a sad moment for our city. Today, as the mayor of the second safest city in the entire state of Florida, I want to reaffirm our complete confidence in the leadership and integrity of the current Hialeah Police Chief, George Fuente, who continues to work tirelessly to ensure the safety and peace of mind of all our residents.” She added, “We remain focused on continuing to strengthen our institutions and move forward towards a future based on transparency, accountability, and exemplary public service.”
